The Atlantic Chess Association’s 2nd Annual Blue Ridge Open, held Sept. 19-21 in Dulles, Va., featured 74 players, with 28 competing in the Open. FA Peter Craney was the chief arbiter for this event, and games from the top boards can be reviewed here.
GM Tal Baron won the first prize with a score of 4/5, but it was not an easy win for him: both FM Vaibhav Kalpaka and CM Aiden Li gave him a tough fight, each holding the grandmaster to a draw. Franco Alejandrino won the U2000 section. Salbin Ismayilova and Smaran Sainathuni tied for first place in the U1500 section.

The Atlantic Chess Association offered a strong open in the Mid-Atlantic for the third year running, also from July 2 through 6. A total of 53 players competed in the two FIDE-rated sections, with 37 in the Under-2300 section and 16 in the open. Another 38 players combined competed in the Under-1900 and Under-1500 sections. Israeli GM Tal Baron claimed clear first with a 7/9 score, a half-point ahead of GMs Vojtech Plat and Gabor Nagy.

Young players square off in National Chess Day tournament
Ten young faces wore looks of concentration Saturday, shuffling kings, queens and knights across game boards in a National Chess Day tournament in Frederick.
The tournament, for children in grades K-12, was hosted by the Atlantic Chess Association at the Hampton Inn & Suites Fort Detrick.
From beginners to kids who have played hundreds of games for years, all quietly calculated their moves over five rounds of chess, playing a different opponent each round. See More

In 2024, the Atlantic Chess Association adapted the aforementioned strategy of hosting a norm event before a major open, and this year they repeated the strategy in Dulles, VA. Held from June 27 through July 1, the ten-player IM Norm Round Robin featured three foreign GMs alongside a host of talented juniors.
Czech GM Vojtech Plat and Hungarian GM Gabor Nagy tied for first with 7/9, while Israeli GM Tal Baron and Indian FM Vaibhav Kalpaka tied for third with 6/9 scores. Kalpaka was in contention for an IM norm... (see more)

The 3rd Annual Charity Chess Tournament was held on April 27th, 2024, at Rachel Carson Middle School in Herndon, VA. We were able to raise over $2000 to support Children's Miracle Network, and organization that helps recovering children hospital patients. The tournament also boasted over 50 players across the Open, U1600, U1000, and Non-rated sections.
